Plague Inc The Cure is a new expansion to Plague Inc, a game that made the news headlines back in March / April 2020 when the pandemic reached an all time high around the world. At that time many who were stranded in Wuhan China due to their local lockdown directive played this game to help understand better how diseases can spread. Now they are back with a New Expansion called “The Cure”.
Plague Inc was a game that made the news headlines back in March / April 2020. At that time many who were stranded in Wuhan China due to their local lockdown directive played this game to help understand better how diseases can spread and it served as “community education” among gamers and young people alike in that vicinity.
The premise of the original Plague Inc (developed by Ndemic Creations) was simple : You are the nasty bug / bacteria / virus and you are out to eradicate humankind by evolving and spreading. There will be forces that will work against you (for example blockades, government health policies, sea and air route shutdowns just to name a few) and eventually the smart humans will develop a vaccine to eradicate you as well.
Looking back, I too played this game for a bit and found that to my surprise the simulation is quite accurate in describing how bacteria, viruses and nasties can be spread and start to “eradicate humankind” with the speed of evolution by jumping from host to host.
I recall when I played this game, there was genuine “fear” and panic as more and more facts are presented to us in a subtle but yet realistic way (due to the fact that most of us are in an ACTUAL pandemic). At times I find that I trust the game info more than whatever covid virus related “facts” that appears in my Social Media feed everyday. It was kinda getting out of control with many misinformation and news snippets which were either represented out of chronological order or just dramatised to increase readership.
I managed to play around 5 to 6 games before it was quickly replaced by newer action games on my trusty Android Phone. Never forgot about the game as it was technically my first map based strategy game played on a mobile phone. It brings a little hint of the famous board games like risk to mind with the hexagonal design of certain parts of the game.
Lately, I heard that Plague Inc had a new Update. It all started when I noticed the official Plague Inc Facebook Page started to have a change of their Facebook Cover, followed by the Facebook Profile photo from the usual red to blue logo. “Something’s up” was the first thing on my mind, as I also thought perhaps it is a “subliminal celebratory visual cue” for the general public to stay positive in times of hardship as the whole world is struggling to find a working vaccine.
To my surprise, it turned out to be a whole freaking EXPANSION to the game.
Yep, It’s not just a visual uplift. Just to put into context, it is hard for this writer to not think otherwise! It is also around this time the launch of the Playstation 5 was imminent and there was a lot of chatter in the internet space that a slew of titles being “remastered” (i.e new paint and skin) to their original PS4 titles.
So off we go, brushing off the old game (it was still sitting in my Android Phone) with the update from Google Play. Mind you I also do mobile game reviews and for a game to be still sitting in my mobile phone is a totally awesome compliment for any mobile gaming title.
So I started to play “Plague Inc – The Cure” during my latest livestream. Due to the fact that it was just released 24 hours before, I was expecting some hidden bugs here and there as well.
This time with the partnership with global health experts including the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), World Health Organisation (WHO) and Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), a new expansion was released to the original game.
I still vividly remember that I played this game sometime back on my channel, where I played a disease out to eradicate the world. I did put in a few more hours of play after Live Streaming it, and managed to unlock a few in game “unlockables”. It was the beginning of the pandemic when every single little news could shook the community, too many things that was unknown about the pandemic that we are dealing with. Plague Inc was featured in many international news outlets because many in China who was experiencing the lockdown then turned to this game to make sense of what was going on and be a little more educated about the disease.
This time however, we are playing the opposite side of the spectrum – the frontliners who are battling the disease with a careful balance of vaccine research, lockdown, economic stimulus and information control.
It was also a pleasant surprise to get a message from the developer that “You can play it for free until covid is under control”. Gee thanks James and the team behind this game! Of course, I do have to mention here that you can choose to support them by paying for the various in game unlockables. Watch the video at 40:00 onwards to see how much it would cost.
After running through the tutorial to see how the game works, I took the plunge and try out Casual Mode. Imagine the horror of seeing ingame Africa being infected until it became a huge red blob was quite scary, and also that young girl singing voice that gave the chills of a horrorful outcome in the middle. I think playing this game while we are in the middle of an actual pandemic does make a difference in the quality of gameplay.
(This is also why I am not really a fan of horror games, I get scared too easily!)
Being in a control center does put some perspective in the overall view of the situation in game, as you deal with people who just refuse to comply with operating procedures simply because they have to make a living. I understand sometimes as humans we struggle with saving our life and ensuring our livelihood, and count our fortunes that our government do try to help us out on economic stimulus. As much as I try to refrain from “taking sides”, i still do feel a hint of anger when non-compliance is on the rise, and the disease start to spread in other parts of the world.
Playing this game has taught me much about what “the higher ups” can do to help, but at the end of the day we still need to play our part as “people” (the red dots in game) and cooperate as much as we can. Some discomfort will be inevitable, in both livelihood or norm, but we can adapt.
Just need time and patience from all parties.
